NHS Junior Class Makes Birthday Kits for Children

The Nonnewaug High School Junior Class Council spent time after school this week to help brighten the birthdays of local children in need.

Using donations from parents and faculty members and Class of 2026 fundraising proceeds, students constructed 40 Birthday in a Box kits for the United Way of Greater Waterbury. The United Way will distribute these kits to local food banks to help make birthdays special for some of the children.

Each kit contains a cake mix, frosting, sprinkles, birthday candles, birthday plates and napkins, a can of soda, and a disposable pan that students packed into bright-colored cheery bags.

The Junior Class Council’s goal was to make 10 kits, but through the generosity of donations, they were able to make four times as many. Advisor Nicole Cowles said the students plan to do this again next year.
