Students in Jessica McKay’s AP Seminar classes at Nonnewaug High School participated in a Mock Trial this week, applying critical thinking, research, and public speaking skills in a realistic courtroom simulation.

Over the past two weeks, students prepared for the Connecticut Bar Association High School Mock Trial Competition case, taking on a variety of roles including defense and prosecution attorneys, witnesses, jurors, and even a special guest judge from the Class of 2025. Throughout the proceedings, classmates worked collaboratively to provide information and evidence to the lead attorneys and witnesses, mirroring the teamwork and strategy required in an actual courtroom.

During the trial, students developed legal arguments, crafted opening and closing statements, conducted direct and cross-examinations, and carefully evaluated the evidence before reaching a verdict. There was even a student courtroom artist. The experience provided an engaging opportunity for students to strengthen their analytical, communication, and collaboration skills while gaining firsthand insight into the legal process.
