Members of the National Honor Society at Nonnewaug High School will be raising funds during October for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation with the sale of pink bandanas and beads and a raffle for two hand-knit chenille Chiefs blankets. The blankets were made by NHS Science Teacher and Honor Society Advisor Melissa Hodges, who is a breast cancer survivor.
The National Honor Society is sponsoring a “Pink-Out” at the Northwest United Football game on October 26 at 5 p.m. The pink beads, pink bandanas, and raffle tickets will be sold at NHS sporting events throughout October, in school on October 25, and at the NHS-sponsored Trick or Treat Street event also on October 26. The tickets are $5 each.
Hodges celebrates one year of being cancer-free this month. She spent the summer knitting the two Chiefs blankets to sell during the National Honor Society’s Breast Cancer Awareness event.
“I am so proud to be a member of this Chiefs community,” Hodges said. “They have supported me through what has been an incredibly challenging year. I've never felt more supported. The blankets were my way of giving back to both this school and breast cancer research/support.”
